A Beginning - Melody's Quilt

I'm at it again with another baby quilt.  And pinwheels again also.  Let me show you my progress so far.  

I have 2 stacks of cut squares.  The larger is a 6" square and the smaller is 4" squares.  I'm using scraps, so the 4" squares are from my smaller scraps. It takes 2 of each color to make one pinwheel.  With the 6" squares it only takes 1 of each color.

 First the 4" squares.  I drew a line diagonally across the square and sewed 1/4" on each side of it.

Then cut them in half.

Now they are all laid out like a pinwheel.

 And now sewn and trimmed. It measures 6 1/2" unfinished.

 For the 6" squares I sewed along the outside edge of the 2 squares put together on all 4 sides.

 And then I cut 2 diagonal lines across it.

Press those open.

Arrange them  the way I want them.

 And sew and  trim.  This is also 6 1/2" unfinished.  It took some figuring to find out what size square to start with, but I think this is the more accurate method and easier method to make pinwheels.  Give it a try.

May Potholders

I know it's June now, but I finished the potholders that I made in May.  I make these for birthday gifts for friends.  I want them to think of me, so why not potholders as gifts.  Every time they open that oven they can remember me because of the gift I gave them.  They don't have to really go with anything but they get used a lot.  I know I go through lots of potholders in my house.

 This is a simple paper pieced pattern that I've been using.  I really like the design of it.

 I'm using lots of veggie and fruit fabric that I have left from my canning cupboard.  Food always can make good potholders.

Carolyn's 60's Quilt

This is a quilt that Carolyn bought at a sale for $17.  The backing was pretty ripped up and it was a tied  quilt.  She took the ties out and got a new backing for it.  I quilted and bound it for her.  Doesn't it look nice?

 I remember these kinds of fabrics.  I really liked them back then.

Wedding Shadow Trapunto Quilt

The quilt for Stefan and Sue is now finished.  It had it's problems in  quilting, but can you tell?  I think with each quilt I overcome new problems and come up with new solutions for the next one.  Mostly in the quilting arena.  But they should really like it.

Those above are the completed quilt after washing.  These below are the quilt before binding and washing.

 It is a king size quilt measuring around 105" square.

Turquoise Tablerunner

Turquoise seems to be my color this season.  I'm using it a lot.  I've noticed it's the color in the stores also.  I must be right on track for a change.

Saturday I sewed up this table runner. 

 I was copying an idea I found on Pinterest.

 I pieced it together my way to save so many smaller squares.  The squares were supposed to be half-square triangles, but I didn't see any reason to keep them that way.

 Now it goes into the quilting lineup.

 On a side note, how about these for beautiful breads.  I'm really having fun making different breads.  I still need to learn how to get the big holes in them.  I do have a nice crusty exterior though.

Flowers in Winter - Quilt Festival Entry

Amy is hosting another Bloggers Quilt Festival. What fun it is. Head on over to see what beautiful quilts there are.  This is the second of my quilts that I am entering.

 I made this for my second son and his bride for a wedding present.  They were married last July, but as you can see I didn't get it finished until winter.  It's filled with trapunto and applique.  It was very fun to do.

Here you can see some of the applique I was doing while it was still summer.

And now pics of the finished quilt in winter.

 Sarah's mother really helped me with the colors.  She kept me to the blue for flowers and leaves instead of adding green and other flower colors.  I'm really glad she did that.  It broke the box in my head and the quilt is much nicer because of that.

 It does look like a  quilt meant for winter, doesn't it?

Vivienne's Owl Quilt

It's quilt festival time again.  What a great way to see a lot of quilts. And get many ideas.  I've decided to enter this baby quilt that I made for Vivienne.  Her mom let me know what colors she was decorating with and also said she likes owls.  So here it is.

 I've really enjoyed doing pinwheels and like the way they look, so they made a good border around those owls.  These are colorful owls also, not the normal brown.  

I got the ideas from much searching from other quilts.  There are inspirations everywhere. And then made my design.

 I started with the pinwheels.

 And then worked on my center.

 Kept adding features to my owls. The applique was all fused down.  My quilting is what is keeping it on.

 A friend embroidered the name on for me.
