I was asked by a friend if I would be willing to finish this afghan that was started by her mother-in-law maybe 25-30 years ago. She had had a good start on it. I just needed to do a couple of strips, crossstitch it and crochet the sashings and border.
It reminds me of the ones my mother used to make. She made a lot of afghans, knitting and crocheting. I got my start from her.
I used to make quite a few of these where you did the afghan stitch (now called the tunisian stitch)
and then crochet on top of it. I've never figured out how to make the backside look nice. I just knot and tuck the ends in but still don't like the look.
This afghan had a lot of popcorn stitches which did take some time.
The woman I crocheted it for is in her 90's. It's nice that she will have some time to enjoy it.
Oh my goodness, that looks just like an afghan my mother made---probably in the '70's! Her's was yellow and had popcorn stitches, and I remember her making it with this long crochet hook. For years, I wondered what that was since I can knit and crochet, but that was a weird combo of the two. A couple of years ago I learned tunisian crochet, so that mystery was solved! I hope your friend enjoys seeing it finally finished.
